UK, US Considering Lunar Cell Phone Network?

A Telecoms.com post titled “In space, no one can hear your ringtone” reports that the British National Space Centre (BNSC) and NASA are considering a lunar cell phone network as part of future cooperative space exploration.

planet_cellphone.jpgThe joint space agency report outlines a proposed mission that would have a satellite enter the moon’s orbit and “release three or four small missile-like vehicles, known as ‘penetrators,’ which would impact at high speed and embed instruments just under the moon’s surface,” the article says. It would then be able to relay communications back to Earth.

Although the primary purpose of the proposed mission would be to gather moon-related data, it will also test a possible “space-based satellite communications network.”

But, as the article points out, “just imagine the roaming charges for those calls.”
