NEW YORK Turner Sports and its partner, the PGA of America, are set to pull in dual revenue streams from a newly released PGA app built for Apple’s iPhone and iTouch.
The PGA Championship App, which went live in the iTunes App Store on Friday, costs users $1.99 to download. In addition, Turner Sports has secured the financial services firm ING as a sponsor — a somewhat noteworthy arrangement given that sponsored iPhone apps are often free for users to download.
The new PGA App has been released in advance of the 2009 PGA Championship, which will take place Aug. 13-16. Fans will be able to stream live video via the app, as well as receive up-to-the-minute scores from the event, which serves as professional golf’s last “major” tournament of the season.
Users can also elect to receive customized alerts on the performance of select players through the app, as well as course information and instructional videos.
