The Guardian has selected the 20 best photographs of the year. Alongside the images, the photographers who captured the moments share their behind-the-scenes take.
Our favorite photo was taken by David Ramos, for Getty Images. Since we can’t publish the pic, here’s a tease from Ramos:
“About two minutes before the fireworks went off, I realized that the crowd were swaying and some of them were struggling to stand up,” wrote Ramos.
