Don’t be surprised if circular videos from today’s football game start popping up in Snapchat feeds.
Just in time for today’s Super Bowl, Snap Inc. has dropped yet another one of its Spectacles-selling Snapbot vending machines, this time in Houston, where the New England Patriots will be taking on the Atlanta Falcons for the first NFL championship since Snap debuted its camera-equipped sunglasses last year.
The Houston bot, which Snap announced today, made its debut via Twitter—surrounded at Pet Kingdom Park by puppies that may or may not want a pair of their own for the annual Puppy Bowl. (But then again, they might prefer to watch this year’s competition of cuteness in virtual reality.)
The appearance comes just days after Snap submitted paperwork for its initial public offering. And while the company’s Form S-1 said revenue from Spectacles sales is still not significant, the company said it plans to continue investing in the hardware and will expand distribution in 2017.
While Snap said early on in its 247-page filing that it’s a “camera company,” it also was clear to point out that it doesn’t monetize products right away, choosing instead to “drive engagement” for products that do generate revenue—which in the case of Snap, is advertising. (The company reported around $400 million in ad revenue last year.)
“Spectacles connect seamlessly with Snapchat and are the best way to make Memories because they capture video from a human perspective,” according to Snap’s S-1 filing. “For example, the wide-angle lens is designed to mimic the way the human eye sees the world so that viewing a Memory later makes a person feel like they are reliving the experience.”
This is the 37th time Snap has placed a bot somewhere in the U.S., according to Mashable. And while they sometimes appear at popular events like the Super Bowl or at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, they’ve also appeared in scenic places like Grand Canyon and Big Sur.
