Second Top London Police Official Resigns

Assistant Commissioner John Yates follows his boss out the door

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner John Yates has resigned, becoming the second Scotland Yard casualty of the News International hacking scandal. His boss, Sir Paul Stephenson, exited his own post yesterday.

In a statement released Monday morning, Scotland Yard said, “Assistant commissioner John Yates has this afternoon indicated his intention to resign to the chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA). This has been accepted. AC Yates will make a statement later this afternoon.”

London Mayor Boris Johnson called Yates’ and Stephenson’s resignations “regrettable but right,” saying, “Whatever mistakes have been made at any level in the police service, now is the time to clear them up.”

Yates resigned as the MPA’s professional standards cases subcommittee held a meeting Monday morning to consider complaints against him.
