Scholastic Uses Apps To Expand Reading Experience

Yesterday Scholastic launched a new line of interactive kids’ book apps for the iPad. The launch brings three new titles to the iPad including: I LOVE YOU THROUGH AND THROUGH, THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS: OCEANS and GO, CLIFFORD, GO!.

For Scholastic, both a publisher and distributor, apps help support their digital book collection. These apps are not digital versions of the books, but instead provide digital experiences to complement the print titles and have games based on the stories.

“This is not too much unlike what we have done with video and TV programming,” says Jeff Mathews, VP of business development at Scholastic. “We are familiar in rolling these things out in formats beyond the printed work and apps are just another way to do this.”

In addition, this year Scholastic is launching an eReader software and customers will be able to purchase eBooks to be read on this software through the Scholastic Book Clubs and the Scholastic Store. It will work across various platforms, such as personal computers, iPhones, iPads and Android devices. The software, which is slated for beta release this spring, will include thousands of children’s eBook titles. Some of the eBooks in the collection will include enhanced features such as animations, read along with functionality and music.

“We wanted to create a platform, rather than just some one off titles,” says Mathews. “The goal of the eBook experience on our application will be to help kids learn to read, and it will include things like dictionaries and quizzes, to help kids get more engaged.”
