As we discussed on Friday with the UK rolling out the first round of “design out terrorism” tests/experiments, it looks like they’ve started part two of the big campaign by announcing the Counter-Terrorism Design Competition for students in design and architecture programs. It’s sort of like a spec contest, with the government handing out a couple thousand dollars for whoever wins, which no one ever like very much, but it has that added bonus of the winners hopefully aiding in the survival of their fellow citizens, so that will probably take a bit of a bite out of the “no-spec!” cries. However, there have been some dissenting opinions out there, including this perspective on the contest from the blog Just Laugh Out Loud, which finds the idea of public design contest to help find ways to protect the upper crust of society a little Orwellian. But whatever your opinions, you’ve probably never read a contest brief this exciting/terrifying.
