Rick Astley Is at Peace With Rick-Rolling

Singer chats with AP's global entertainment and lifestyles editor.

RickAstley50The world never gave up its love for Rick Astley. The British singer’s first album in 23 years recently topped the U.K. charts and his limited summer U.S. bi-coastal tour sold out.

When Astley spoke recently with AP global entertainment and lifestyles editor Nekesa Mumbi Moody, he explained that it was his daughter who helped him let go of his resentment over the phenomenon of rick-rolling and understand the hyperlink prank’s enduring brand-value. The 50-year-old singer also gave a nice shout-out to YouTube user Hugh Atkin:

“There have been some really, really clever things done with that song. It has not just been rick-roll. There have been so many different things. One of my favorites is they got [President Barack] Obama to sing “Never Gonna Give You Up” [in a mash-up video] or say it at least, which I thought was brilliant. I mean, it’s obviously somebody with too much time on their hands, but they also did that with Mad Men as well.

Astley also told Moody that he holds no grudge against journalists who made fun of him back in the day.
