Richard David Story Exits Departures Magazine

In reporting that Richard David Story will clock his final day at Time Inc.'s Departures magazine Friday, WWD's Alexandra Steigrad at one point in her article drops the word 'departure' and the parenthetical note--(no pun intended). But here at Fishbowl, our thoughts are all about literal departures. Perusing the clippings of Departures EIC Story, there are all sorts of reminders of the luxurious professional life he has led since taking the helm of the magazine in 2000. The glossy is published seven times a year and distributed for free to American Express Platinum card holders. [kickout id="1"] When Story returned last year to St. Barts for the first time since a long-ago honeymoon, he tapped the expertise of Francesca Leoni, who heads up PR in Italy for Valentino and spends two weeks every March on the island. And when Story wrote about his stay just over a year ago at a wellness clinic in Spain, on the way back from Milan, it was in praise of the macrobiotic cooking at SHA's restaurant and the techniques that helped him kick the smoking habit: Before turning out the lights in my bedroom in Alicante, Spain, on January 22, 2016, I stepped out onto the terrace in the chill of the Mediterranean night, under the stars, overlooking the sea... and lit my last Marlboro Lights 100’s. To be honest, I haven’t thought much about smoking since then. Seriously. ... There was hypnosis, psychotherapy, blood tests and more blood tests, and something called “ozone therapy,” which a doctor friend in New York told me was “completely worthless.” All I know is that the program worked for me. Though I wish I had had the full seven-day experience. I’m still not smoking. Yes, the urge can still raise its ugly head, but my ability to say no is much stronger. The program obviously doesn’t and can’t work for everyone, but a year later, I am its greatest fan, and even if I hadn’t gone for the smoking but rather for sleeping, eating, or just plain relaxing, I would recommend it. All in all, it's a long way from Story's first taste of travel, in Oklahoma, as an eight-year-old. To hear more about that, watch the clip below.
