National Journal hands its top editing job to Stephen G. Smith. He has been editor of The Washington Examiner, U.S. News & World Report, Time and Newsweek and served as editor at National Journal between 1996 and 1998 when, of course, the magazine was a print product. He returns to steer the new digital ship into the future. Ben Pershing, who had been editor of National Journal Daily, gets a bump to managing editor. “Steve Smith was the editor of National Journal when I bought the magazine 18 years ago,” Atlantic Media chairman David Bradley said in a statement. “As we return National Journal to its roots as the provider of premium content for the Washington professional, I’m grateful to him and to Ben, both pros in this business, for their leadership, expertise and wisdom.”…

GQ adds former Gawker senior editor Caity Weaver as writer and editor. She’ll run the front of book The Punch List and write for the magazine and website… The Fader hires Kate Carrington for a new role as vice president of marketing strategy, while also recruiting Jenny Peck to be marketing director… Corky Siemaszko leaves the Daily News, where he’s been for 22 years. “Through all the layoffs, I always said as long as Corky was there, there was still a Daily News. Now he’s leaving. A lot of institutional memory is gone. But they don’t care about that.
