“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away,” wrote acclaimed French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and, in many ways, he could have been taking about social media, albeit close to a century before its existence.
You see, the perfect post on a platform like Twitter is often as much about what you leave out as what you say. Not only because of the hard and fast 140 character limit, but also because of the desire for efficiency and clarity of prose. And when you consider that each of your posts will also need a clear call to action, excellent punctuation, sufficient retweet space and a shortened URL, the area reserved for your message – that is, what you’re actually trying to say – has to be very concise indeed. Which means it has to be perfect. Every single time.
