The OC Register has officially renamed its iPad app to “OCRegister The Peel,” in an effort to distinguish it as a standalone product–distinct from the newspaper and much of its content.
“When we launched the iPad app six months ago, our goal was to create an original and uniquely entertaining experience that’s suited specifically for tablet users,” says Doug Bennett, president of “interactive” at the Register‘s parent company Freedom Communications, in a release. “We believe the next step in the evolution of the app is to create a standalone identity as OCRegister The Peel, to call it out as its own progressive news and entertainment vehicle that appeals to the growing number of iPad owners.”
The move isn’t surprising. Bennett spoke about the plan openly in an interview several weeks ago. The Register will launch a newsier app called “The Orange County Register News Edition” later this month. The Peel is geared towards a younger, entertainment-oriented audience.
As we said last month, sounds like a great plan for the Register–provided they don’t gut the news-gathering operation to finance it.
