Nick Denton: Silicon Valley Billionaires ‘More Powerful Than a Congressman’

"A Silicon Valley billionaire is a hundred times, a thousand times, more powerful than the average Congressman."

During Recode’s Code Conference, Gawker founder Nick Denton continued to defend Gawker’s coverage of Peter Thiel and its culture in general.

When Denton was asked about Thiel’s quest for revenge via bankrolling Terry “Hulk Hogan” Bollea’s lawsuits against Gawker, Denton said that Silicon Valley should be under more scrutiny, not less.

“A Silicon Valley billionaire is a hundred times, a thousand times, more powerful than the average Congressman,” explained Denton. “I think there’s an imbalance, and part of the way in which that balance is corrected is through news and journalism and gossip.”

Denton insisted that Gawker’s willingness to go after the powerful is what makes it unique.

“The fearlessness of Gawker, it’s why we have 4 million people come every weekday to Gawker and other properties… to take on as many enemies as we did, I’m proud of that.”
