Newspapers Cut Back on Op-Eds

While everyone has an opinion, newspapers are less likely to publish it now than in the past. According to Pew Research Center, “Interviews with editors across the country have confirmed a gradual shift both in the amount of space given over to opinion and in the missions of editorial and op-ed pages.”

One reason for the decline of op-eds is papers are looking to fuel conversation, and declaring specific takes isn’t conducive to that goal.

Beyond the interviews, Pew cites the Association of Opinion Journalist’s membership decline as an indication of this trend.
