The NAA has named Michael MaLoon as its vice president of innovation, a newly created position within the organization. MaLoon is tasked with opening up channels for new partnerships and promoting and enabling industry innovation.
“I am deeply committed to the power and purpose of news media, and am honored to now work on behalf of the Newspaper Association of America’s members,” said MaLoon in a statement. “It has been a privilege to see the ongoing development and transformation of the newspaper industry firsthand, and I am excited to work with the association’s great staff to contribute to its advancement.”
MaLoon was most recently the director of recruitment sales and operations at The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, as well as the former digital director of The Buffalo News, where he presided over a period of revenue growth.
“Our industry is in the midst of constant evolution and experimentation, and Michael is uniquely positioned to facilitate strategic conversations and partnerships on behalf of our members. We are thrilled to welcome him to our team,” said NAA CEO David Chavern in a statement.
When Chavern was hired as CEO in October, he indicated that one of his preliminary areas of focus would be collaboration, as well as navigating safely through “transitional challenges and technology.” MaLoon’s position will help to concretize those aims.
