New York Times Names New Berlin Bureau Chief, Europe Editor

The New York Times has named Alison Smale its new Berlin bureau chief and Dick Stevenson its Europe editor.

Smale has been with the Times since 1998. She most recently served as executive editor of the International Herald Tribune (which is now called the International New York Times).

Stevenson has been with the Times since 1985. He most recently served as the paper’s chief Washington correspondent. In his new role he will oversee all European news for every edition of the Times.

“For the past decade, Alison Smale has been the heart and soul of the IHT, a consummate journalist and passionate leader as executive editor for more than four years,” said Jill Abramson, executive editor of the Times, in a statement.
