Per a fun piece in the Dayton Daily News, making inroads in this department is Oakwood, Ohio resident Mary Lou Guizzo. She’s been creating crossword puzzles for the past few years, some on her own and others with the help of a Seattle-based collaborator:
“I’m a big fan of Mary Lou, who has had five crosswords published in the New York Times so far, with more on the way,” said [editor Will] Shortz. “Two of these puzzles have been ‘themeless’ Friday ones, featuring wide-open white spaces and few black squares. This is a domain usually dominated by male constructors. Mary Lou’s work ranks with the best.”
Other papers that have carried crossword work by Guizzo include the Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times.
