McClatchy Is Switching To Google Apps, Saving $1 Million Over The Next Five Years

Hey, when we read about a newspaper company saving money without cutting jobs, we have to applaud.

McClatchy, which in recent years has shed thousands of newspaper jobs in an effort to shore up income on rapidly tumbling revenue, is switching away from Microsoft’s email and collaboration tools to Google Apps, Business Insider said.

And the company is also cutting back on the number of MS Office upgrades it pays for, hoping to move all 8,500 employees to Google Docs, ultimately.

This move will save $1 million over five years, so not an astonishing amount, but that’s in addition to any savings the company realizes if/when it reduces the size of its IT department.
