Politico Staffing Changes
Bill Nichols, the former White House and State Department correspondent for USA Today, has been named managing editor of The Politico and Politico.com.
Nichols, 49, has served as deputy editor of the print and online versions of Politico for the past month. “Bill is rightly regarded as one of the smartest and steadiest political journalists in the country,” said Jim VandeHei, executive editor of Politico. “He will guide our publication, both in print and on the Web, in a time of exciting expansion for our company.”
Barbara E. Martinez, an assistant editor, has been promoted to deputy managing editor of The Politico.
Beth Frerking, former national correspondent at Newhouse News Service in Washington, and G. Robert Hillman, former White House correspondent for The Dallas Morning News, will serve as senior editors of The Politico and Politico.com.
“The only way to provide top-notch coverage of Congress, lobbying and the 2008 election is with savvy and experienced editorial leadership,” VandeHei said. “We are delighted Beth and Bob are lending their expertise to our venture.”
Erika Pontarelli Compart, former editor/reporter at Agence France-Presse, has been named copy chief.
