Longtime Columnist Jim Knipfel Out at NYPress

Just in: A well-informed tipster tells us that New York Press columnist Jim Knipfel was let go today by the paper. Knipfel, who is essentially blind, wrote the first-person Slackjaw column in addition to news and film reviews. Knipfel had been with the paper for over 13 years.

Ownership, we’re told, has “wanted him out” for nearly three years, and never quite understood Knipfel’s memoirish, off-beat musings.

“He was the last remaining reason to read the paper,” says another of Knipfel’s fans.

UPDATE: A call to Knipfel at the Press confirms the news, though, understandably, he was unable to comment otherwise.
