Keep Keith Away From the Cleaning Supplies

How does MSNBC “Hardball” host Chris Matthews really feel about Delaware Senate hopeful Christine O’Donnell, who has now lost her race to Sen.-elect Chris Coons? (He thinks she was a “particularly bad” candidate.) But more importantly, let’s look at Keith Olbermann’s solvent metaphor for the Tea Party. He says it can get a stain out of his suit, but reasons it will “eat through any container.” Matthews plays along with the metaphor but pokes fun at Olbermann. We’re not sure what kind of stain remover Olbermann uses, but it doesn’t sound fit for a human household. Watch here.

OLBERMANN: …My theory about the Tea Party, in all respects, has been the old idea of the universal solvent, which is the substance that can dissolve any other substance on the planet. There is a problem eventually….the universal solvent is wonderful if something’s blocked or we have to clean something–it can get a stain out of my suit or your suit or whatever, but the problem is, ultimately, where the hell do you keep the stuff? It will eat through any container, and eventually go right through to the center of the earth. And one of the arguments about extremism in American politics is that eventually you will find some surface…

MATTHEWS: You know some people will go to bed tonight worried about the existence of the universal solvent. [Laughter] They were worried about snakes until now, they got this new thing to worry about because of you.

OLBERMANN: But Lawrence, this is my point, as crazy as it is, there will be a lot of people who will–to Chris’ point about sleeping tonight–will sleep better knowing that out of all the things that will or won’t happen, Christine O’Donnell is not in the US Senate.
