James Corden Says ‘Hello’ to Prime Time TV Audience

The Late Late Show one-year anniversary special airs tonight at 10 p.m.

By the time Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special airs tonight at 10 p.m. on CBS, James Corden’s drive through London with Adele will almost certainly have passed a new high-water mark: 90 million YouTube views. (At press time, it was 140,000 views shy.)

In an interview with Time magazine TV critic Daniel D’Addario ahead of tonight’s big one-year anniversary special, The Late Late Show host explained how Adele’s friends played a key role in the video’s success:

“I’m very lucky, in that I’ve known Adele for quite some time. We met about seven or eight years ago and got on very well. My wife has known her, or first met her, before I ever did, and we have a lot of mutual friends.”

“The beauty of that was to be able to talk to some of her friends and ask what would be a great thing. A few of them said “You’ve got to get her to do the Nicki Minaj rap, she’s amazing.” A few others said “She’s a huge fan of the Spice Girls, a proper bona fide fan.” Having that bit of insight is terrific.”

Six hours after the Adele Carpool Karaoke installment hit, one of the songs featured, “All I Ask,” had jumped from #109 to #4 on iTunes.
