In case you thought there were far too few awards shows on TV for the celeb-obsessed, People is debuting a new one. The People Magazine Awards, hosted by Nick Cannon, will celebrate the year in pop culture and feature appearances from stars like Jennifer Aniston, Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Lopez. The two-hour event airs tonight on NBC at 9 p.m. ET.
“We are excited to launch our inaugural awards this year on the heels of People’s 40th birthday celebration,” Jess Cagle, editorial director of People and Entertainment Weekly, told FishbowlNY.
Viewers can also expect musical performances from 5 Seconds of Summer and Voice coaches Gwen Stefani (who will debut her new single, “Spark the Fire”), Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine (as part of Maroon 5).
Among the accolades to be handed out is People‘s Hero of the Year Award, an honor bestowed to a non-celebrity who’s made a generous and selfless contribution to his or her community. This year’s Hero Award will go to Nora Sandigo, founder and executive director of American Fraternity Inc. and an advocate for the rights of immigrants and their families.
And because no awards show is complete these days without a social call to action, readers can tweet @peoplemag with hashtag #PEOPLEMagazineAwards to vote for the Best People Magazine Cover of the Year, which will be announced during the telecast.
The event is in collaboration with Dick Clark Productions. Cagle told us the conversations with the TV production company began several years ago. “We had worked with them when covering the Golden Globes, among other shows they produce. We were impressed with their track record of creating the best award shows in television. They were impressed with People‘s place in U.S. pop culture and our franchises — a la Sexiest Man Alive — and a partnership for the People Magazine Awards was born.”
