The Washington Post has hired Dave Weigel as a national political reporter, the paper announced this morning. Weigel worked for the Post as a blogger back in 2010, a tenure that lasted only three months after Weigel’s provacative comments on the center to left-wing journalist listserv Journolist were revealed on FishbowlDC and picked up by other outlets. Weigel, whose beat had been conservative politics, resigned after his emails became public.
Weigel moved on to Washington Post-owned Slate and most recently to Bloomberg Politics, where he had been a reporter covering Rand Paul‘s campaign, a beat he’ll continue to cover at the Washington Post. Weigel will also helm a new political podcast currently in development. His first day is July 20.
According to the Erik Wemple blog, Weigel received a few inquiries after a memo from an unhappy Washington bureau staffer revealed a uncomfortable tension between Bloomberg’a New York and DC offices. When Weigel received a call from Washington Post managing editor Kevin Merida he told Wemple, “I listen to Kevin Merida when he talks.”
