CNN has announced it is pumping $200 million into CNN Digital and hiring 200 staffers, but as a result of this expansion, more than 50 people will be let go. A fine example of the oddity that is working in media.
According to The Wall Street Journal, staffers on the chopping block include staffers tied to CNN’s desktop site, “several generalist reporters and editors as well as employees from the company’s product, technology and operations.”
Those pink-slipped are being encouraged to reapply for the 200 new roles. In some world that makes sense, but not this one.
The CNN Digital expansion will be focused on three areas: mobile, online video, and global operations.
