The changes at CQ Roll just in the beginning of this week span the spectrum of fires, planned hires and promotions. First the internal moves:
- Matt Mansfield has a new role in a newly created position, that of vice president for product innovation. Mansfield’s relationship with CQ Roll Call started in a consulting capacity, when he helped redesign CQ Weekly. In this new position, Mansfield is tasked with setting CQ Roll Call’s digital strategy, and is responsible for data reporting, data visualization, design, photo and video staff. Mansfield will also add product and UX designers to his team.
- John Bennett, a fairly recent hire, has been named White House reporter. He will be part of the Congress team, a newly created department that is a joint effort of CQ and CQ Roll Call staff. In his previous role on the CQ news team, Bennett was the primary budget tracker writer. The search is on for his replacement.
These announcements come in the wake of two layoffs originally reported by HuffPost’s Michael Calderone, including the departure of Steven Dennis, whom Bennett is replacing on the White House beat.
The layoffs don’t appear to be a harbinger for further cuts; CQ Roll Call is planning to add staff to Roll Call, chief content officer David Ellis indicated in a memo announcing Bennett’s new role.
