Boehner: ‘Stupid’ to Blame Amtrak Crash on Funding Cuts

“Are you really going to ask? That’s a stupid question.”

After a reporter on Thursday began to ask John Boehner (R-OH) to respond to criticism from Democrats that the deadly train wreck in Philadelphia was a result funding cuts, the Speaker decided to channel his inner Bryce Harper.

“Are you really going to ask? That’s a stupid question,” Boehner told the reporter.

“They started this yesterday, ‘it’s all about funding, it’s all about funding,'” he continued. “Well, obviously it’s not about funding. The train was going twice the speed limit. Adequate funds were there. No money has been cut from rail safety and the house passed a bill earlier this spring to reauthorize Amtrak and authorize a lot of these programs.”

House Democrats have implied that “inadequate funding for Amtrak contributed to the Philadelphia derailment,” based on GOP appropriators voting to set Amtrak’s federal funding at $1.14 billion next fiscal year, down from $1.39 billion.
