eBooks are really going international this week. With the Kindle book store now open in France and the Google eBook store now open in the U.K.,we almost missed the fact that Apple has expanded eBook distribution for Smashwords to 26 new iBookstores across Europe.
Smashwords has more: “Prior to this week, over 50,000 Smashwords ebook titles were available in Apple iBookstores in the US, Canada, U.K., Germany, France and Australia.” Now all Smashwords titles have access to distribution in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Smashwords founder Mark Coker says eBooks outside of the U.S. only account for about 1-5% of the market this year, but he sees a lot of potential in this market. Here is more from his blog post: “These markets are only now beginning to enter, or will soon enter, exponential growth phases that will take them to 15-25% the next few years assuming their growth trajectories follow similar patterns seen in the US and other English speaking countries.”
