Here’s a Wednesday morning exclusive: today APCO Worldwide will announce the hiring of John Stauffer, formerly of Social@Ogilvy, as co-leader of its StudioOnline practice and top digital strategist in its Washington, DC office.
Only nine months ago, PR Week reported that Ogilvy had promoted Stauffer to SVP/regional strategy director — a role created specifically for him. In that position, Stauffer worked with agency offices across North America in tracking consumer behavioral trends; he described his role as that of “the connective tissue across our social media teams.”
The new position will allow Stauffer to expand upon his ambitions while driving strategy and helping to lead the agency’s “full-service integrated group.” He writes:
“It was very clear from the outset that APCO was committed to making strategic investments in new digital and creative solutions. The energy and momentum was palpable in meeting with the senior leadership team. I’m thrilled to be part of the agency and to help build the business in Washington, D.C.”
Stauffer served several strategic roles within the Ogilvy organization. He was a VP at Social@Ogilvy for three years before the May 2014 promotion, and he also served as regional strategy director of Ogilvy Asia Pacific in Hong Kong from 2010-2011 after joining the firm in 2008.
Mike Tuffin, managing director of the DC office, calls Stauffer “a proven senior digital strategist” ready to navigate our “ever-changing digital and social environments.”
His appointment is the latest in a string of international hires and promotions for APCO:
- In November, founder Margery Kraus became chairman and promoted International President Brad Staples to CEO.
- At the same time, Evan Kraus, former director of StudioOnline, moved into the president/MD of operations role while Neal Cohen ascended to vice chairman of the board/head of global client strategy.
- In December, APCO appointed former PepsiCo SVP of Global Health Derek Yach to its health advisory board, named Karen Buerkle MD of its opinion research arm APCO Insight and promoted two within that organization.
- New York-based Managing Director Nelson Fernandez and MD Nicolas Bouvier of Paris also assumed chairmanships of its North American and European operations as members of the APCO global leadership team (GLT).
Stauffer, who has lectured at Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, and the University of Maryland on trends in digital marketing and communications, started his career at New York’s Stanton Communications.
In other news, he has a sense of humor about the game we play:
Replace “millennials” with “people younger than me” in your creative brief. If sentence still makes sense, consider greater granularity.
