NEW YORK — WPP Group’s third-quarter revenue fell nearly 3 percent to about $1.4 billion, compared with the same period last year, according to a statement released by the London-based holding company on Thursday.

For the first nine months of the year, revenue was down 2 percent to $4.5 billion, compared with the first nine months of 2001.

In North America, revenue dropped about 7 percent, to about $629 million, compared with third-quarter 2001. North American revenue was also off 7 percent, to about $2 billion, for the first nine months of the year, compared with the same period last year.
