TBWA/C/D Loses Sattler a Second Time

Eighteen months after returning to TBWA/Chiat/Day, director of media strategy and managing partner Fred Sattler is going back to his home state of Michigan. Sattler left the agency once before for an 11-month stint at The Leap Partnership in Los Angeles.
Sattler, 43, is moving to Michigan to become executive vice president and executive media director at Doner, a new post.
Sattler will be charged with centralizing planning and buying functions at the shop’s headquarters in Southfield, Mich., instead of at Doner’s individual offices. The agency claims more than $1 billion in billings from BP Amoco, Mazda and others.
“The growth of our agency has created new opportunities that demand someone of Fred’s talents, stature and experience to lead our efforts,” said Doner chairman and CEO, Alan Kalter.
Sattler’s leaving of TBWA/C/D here was prompted, in part, by the high cost of living in the Bay Area, said sources.
It is uncertain what effect the exit will have on TBWA/C/D’s Levi’s jeans business–he was a key player in guiding media strategy for the brand. Sattler’s efforts, said sources, helped pacify Levi Strauss & Co. executives, who have been unhappy with most of the agency’s creative efforts.
Sattler’s return to TBWA/C/D in early 1998 came after an 11-month stint at the former Leap Partnership, Los Angeles. A TBWA/C/D representative said a replacement had not yet been named.
