Starcom Elevates Muszynski to CEO

NEW YORK John Muszynski has been named chief executive officer of Publicis Groupe’s Starcom USA, the agency said.

He continues to report to Renetta McCann, CEO of Starcom Mediavest Group.

Muszynski, 46, last April was promoted to managing director of investment and operations at Chicago-based Starcom. Prior to last year’s promotion, Muszynski had been the agency’s chief investment officer since 1999.

Muszynski’s promotion fills a slot that was vacated four years ago when McCann ascended the ranks at Starcom.

“John is someone who is constantly looking ahead to meet the opportunities and challenges of the future,” McCann said.

Muszynski said his first order of business would be to “continue to prepare the agency and its clients for the future, and that future ends up being here today rather than tomorrow,” due to the rapid changes the industry is going through largely as the result of advances in technology.

A lot of his time, he said, would be spent determining new ways to engage consumers who have been “empowered” with new consumer electronic devices like TiVo. But he stressed that Starcom is in “great shape,” and that he has no plans for an overhaul of the shop’s management team or structure.

Adweek estimates that Starcom’s billings and revenue rose approximately 8 percent in 2004 to $6.9 billion and $265 million, respectively.
