Sony Taps SRI for $150 Mil. Review

LOS ANGELES Select Resources International confirmed it has been hired to oversee a review for Sony Electronics’ U.S. advertising account. Estimated billings are $150 million.

The client parted with WPP Group’s Young & Rubicam in Irvine, Calif., earlier this month, and the agency’s contract with the client expires on March 31.

The account had been at Y&R for seven years. Sony Electronics’ svp and general manager of corporate marketing Mark Viken is a key executive in the agency search, sources said. He is based in San Diego.

Publicis Groupe’s Fallon in Minneapolis handles Sony Electronics in Europe while Omnicom Group’s TBWA\Chiat\Day, Playa del Rey, Calif., crafts ads for the Sony PlayStation. Those accounts are unaffected, sources said.

When the account was last in review in 1998, Interpublic Group’s Foote Cone & Belding in New York, was one finalist.

Another shop that reached the finals in the last review, WPP’s JWT in New York, is now conflicted with Samsung.
