With a Grain of Salt

As momentum picks up for efforts to regulate the amount of salt in packaged foods, a Rasmussen Reports poll detects limited public appetite for such action. While 33 percent of respondents favor steps by the Food and Drug Administration “to set mandatory standards for how much salt is allowed in food,” 55 percent are opposed. (The rest are unsure.)

Another finding in the poll (conducted last month) suggests consumers feel capable of regulating the contents of their own diets. Asked to say how closely they “monitor the ingredients in the food you eat,” 31 percent said “very closely” and 46 percent “somewhat closely.” Fifteen percent said “not very closely” and 6 percent “not at all.”
