Colby Effler Seeking New Business Chief

Colby Effler & Partners has launched a search for a senior account executive to partner with creative chief Rick Colby, leaving agency chairman Don Effler free to focus more on his duties as vice chairman of parent Dentsu USA.
Colby, executive creative director and chief operating officer at the Santa Monica, Calif., shop, confirmed he is “looking for a very senior person to help grow the business.” The new hire will concentrate primarily on attracting new clients, Colby said.
Recruitment firm Brown, Bernardy, Van Remmen in West Los Angeles is handling the executive search, said sources. Executives there could not be reached for comment. The agency has focused its search in California, said Colby, adding that he hopes to hire the new executive within the next few weeks.
Colby will remain in his current position, reporting to chairman Don Effler, who has been scaling back his involvement with the shop’s activities over the past year.
“Don got heavily involved in the agency because it needed the help,” Colby said. “Since I’ve been here, things have gone well. Don can now do what he was hired to do [as Dentsu vice chairman].”
Effler, who relocated his family from New York to Los Angeles last year, said he will continue to split time between the two cities as Dentsu vice chairman.
“My role as chairman [at Colby Effler] isn’t going to change,” he said. “We’re ready to be more active on the new business front.”
Separately, the agency has hired copywriter Don Koeberle and art director Brad Gantt, both from Team One Advertising, El Segundo, Calif. The shop is also looking for an account supervisor on its Suzuki motorcycle business, Colby said.
JSM+ Communications, also owned by Dentsu, recently relocated from Marina del Rey, Calif., to Colby’s Santa Monica offices. Scott Daly, JSM+ executive vice president and media director, heads up media work for both agencies.
