NEW YORK–After months of overhaul at CNN, it was announced on at the end of the day Thursday that Tom Johnson, chairman and CEO of CNN News Group will be stepping away from the day-to-day operations of the division.

According to a statement, Johnson will serve as an advisor to Jamie Kellner, chairman and CEO of Turner Broadcasting Systems Inc. on a multi-year basis.

Johnson explained in an internal memo sent to staffers that with his 60th birthday looming, he wanted to spend more time with his children and grandchildren and travel with his wife, Edwina.
