Bozell Fills ECD Post in N.Y.

Bozell Worldwide has hired Tony Granger as its new executive creative director, filling the slot vacated in late October by Brent Bouchez, who left to start his own agency, Bouchez, Kent + Co.

Granger, 40, who is the co-creative director at TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris in Johannesburg, South Africa, starts at the New York-based shop in late January. After 12 years with TBWA\H\L, Granger is best known for his work on BMW, Bic pens, nonprofit organization Reach for a Dream and Playtex’s Wonderbra, which have all won gold Lions at Cannes.

The broad range of his achievements and their recognition were attractive to Bozell. “The totality of his work is outstanding,” said president Tom Bernardin. “He is able to play on the worldwide stage from South Africa; imagine what he is going to do in New York.”

While searching for a new executive creative director, Bernardin said the shop considered three candidates. But after seeing Granger’s reel and print work, “We made our decision,” he said.

Granger noted that with his contract at TBWA\H\L ending soon, he was looking for a post at an agency in England, the U.S. or South America.

“The people at Bozell interested me the most,” he said. “There is room to grow and great opportunities. I really like their work.”

Granger currently oversees about 50 staffers at TBWA\H\L, which bills about $185 million. At Bozell, which claims billings of about $875 million, he will oversee 100 staffers and sit on the management board.

Some of Bozell’s major accounts include Verizon Wireless, Dairy Management, Bank of America, Bristol-Myers Squibb and The New York Times.

Granger started his career at Grey Johannesburg in 1981, and then worked at South African shops Braud & Asso-ciates, Preller Sharpe Rice and Geffen Sim-kins & Marrington, in that order. Granger explained that making the geographic transition is not an issue for him. “Advertising has no borders,” he said. “I’m looking forward to working in New York. Bozell has an enthusiasm and passion for advertising.”
