ESPN2 Night “Knowledge’ Ads Bowl Over the Judges
LOS ANGELES-A round, fuzzy “Knowledge” animal took home top honors at last week’s 33rd Annual Belding Awards.
Ground Zero, Marina del Rey, Calif., captured the prized Sweepstakes Award for its creepy ESPN2 Night “Knowledge” campaign, which depicted a sports-obsessed young man and his growing sphere of knowledge, personified by a faceless, furry grey pet. The shop also captured the most Belding bowls, a total of six, for its work for ESPN2, ESPN, ESPNews, Genesee Brewing Co. and Virgin Cola.
TBWA/Chiat/Day carried home three bowls from the Ad Club of Los Angeles-sponsored creative show, which was held last Thursday at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. The Playa del Rey, Calif., shop was recognized for its work for Levi’s, ABC and last year’s Belding invite. This year’s invite, themed “They can never take it away,” was also created by the shop, which won last year’s Sweepstakes award for its “Think different” work for Apple Computer.
Additional first-place bowl winners were Deutsch/LA for Mitsubishi dealers; Green Dot Films for DDB Needham/Fort James; Kowloon Wholesale Seafood Co. for Jack in the Box; Rubin Postaer and Associates for VH1; Tool of North America for Yahoo!; Adlhoch Creative for Glendale Federal Bank; BBDO West for Starbucks; Rubin Postaer Interactive for Honda; Team One Advertising for a pro bono anti-drug spot; WongDoody for a self-promotion piece; al Punto Advertising for foreign language work for Disneyland; and Anita Santiago Advertising for foreign language work for Carl’s Jr.
The awards were presented by Los Angeles-area creatives Tom Cordner, Team One Advertising; Court Crandall, Ground Zero; Larry Postaer, Rubin Postaer and Associates; Rob Schwartz, TBWA/C/D; Sally Hogshead, Robaire & Hogshead; and Eric Hirshberg, Deutsch/LA. The Sweepstakes bowl was presented to Ground Zero by Lee Clow, chairman and chief creative officer of TBWA/C/D.
The second-place category was eliminated this year, leaving only first-place bowls and finalist certificates. A total of 21 bowls plus the Sweepstakes were awarded, along with 62 finalist certificates.
There were approximately 1,300 entries and 700 attendees, down from last year’s 850.
