Here’s What TV Viewers Watched Most In 2021

Although only available for a few months of the year, NFL and college football dominated the viewing time among linear TV viewers last year, according to an analysis by VIZIO’s Inscape automatic content recognition data team

Inscape data compiles the viewing activity of millions of VIZIO smart TV users, representing the largest single source of opt-in viewing data available in the U.S. today. The analysis of 2021 viewing habits focused on the most popular linear TV programming by percentage of actual minutes watched and is reported based on the total minutes spent watching each show. 

Among the topline takeaways: 

  • NFL football led as the No. 1 most-watched program for the year, with 2.7% of overall minutes watched
  • College football followed at No. 2, with 1.3% of minutes watched. 
  • Other sports were also popular, with NBA games No. 4 at 0.76% and the Tokyo Olympics No. 7 at 0.66%
  • New and syndicated broadcast TV series also placed highly, with the more popular shows placing No. 3, No. 9, and No. 10. 
  • Morning news/talk shows rounded out the top 10, ranking No. 5 and No. 8
