Season 2 of Machinima's Mortal Kombat Off to a Solid Start But views fall off after Episode 1

Mortal Kombat

The pressure's on.

After Season 1 of Machinima's Mortal Kombat series evolved into a monster hit—to the tune of 70 million views—expectations are high for Season 2, which premiered online last Thursday. And with Machinima fresh off a round of layoffs, the multichannel network could use a bit of positive news.

But it has been about two years since the last season of Mortal Kombat hit the Web—an eternity in Internet time.

Still, Season 2 is off to a pretty good start. In line with today's digital video trends, Machinima put all 10 episodes online at once. Episode 1, which clocks in at a little under 11 minutes, has garnered about 2.4 million views as of this writing. No other episode in the season has cracked a million views yet. Episode 2 comes closest with about 870,000 views, and the other episodes hover around 500,000.

Machinima CEO Allen DeBevoise told Adweek that the company is hoping to leverage other top YouTube channels to help promote the show. An assist in getting the word out may be key to how the second season performs—especially since the numbers don't indicate that viewers are binge-viewing beyond the first episode.
