Gannett announced plans Wednesday (April 28) to consolidate its local media operations in Phoenix, which includes KPNX-TV, the NBC affiliate, The Arizona Republic and La Voz, as well as other print and digital properties. By early 2011, KPNX is expected to vacate its current location and move into new studios on the ground floor of the Republic Media building in downtown Phoenix, where Gannett’s other properties reside.
The move will make it easier for Gannett’s local media operations in Phoenix to streamline operations and collaborate. KPNX and The Arizona Republic already share a Web site, azcentral.com.
In a tight ratings race for the local news audience, KPNX also hopes to capitalize on a live audience in a new street-level studio.
“The new studio will allow our team to connect with viewers like never before. Much like NBC’s Today, we know a live audience will bring energy to our newscasts and provide a true downtown destination no other station in the market can match,” said John Misner, president and general manager for KPNX.
