David Friend was promoted Tuesday (Aug. 10) to svp of news for the CBS Television Group. He will continue to serve as vp and news director for WCBS-TV, the company’s New York flagship, a position he’s held since June 2006.

In his new position, Friend will collaborate with the local management at CBS’s owned stations to oversee news production and news operations and help stations share best practices. In addition, he’ll also work with CBS Radio execs on developing and strengthening local news partnerships in the markets where CBS owns both TV stations and News, Talk or Sports radio stations.

“David Friend has done a tremendous job of leading the WCBS-TV news department to exciting new heights over the past four years,” said Peter Dunn, president of the CBS Television Stations Group. “The quality of our newscasts has significantly and consistently improved, as have the ratings, and we are very pleased that he will be doing more to share his 30-plus years of experience and insights as well as his great eye for talent with the outstanding team of station executives who oversee the day-to-day operation of our local news departments.”

Friend’s resume includes news positions at CNBC and Warner Bros. where he served as executive producer and co-creator of the syndicated “Extra.”
