A village in India has decided to rename itself Snapdeal.com—and, amazingly, it’s not a marketing stunt.
Snapdeal.com, an online coupon company that’s more popular than Groupon in India, had adopted the village and provided it with manual pumps to give the residents access to clean water. In order to shows its appreciation, the village formerly known as Shiv Nagar in Uttar Pradesh surprised the company by renaming itself Snapdeal.com Nagar (which means “town”).
Snapdeal.com CEO Kunal Bahl told TechCrunch that the idea to install water pumps in the village came from a conversation he had with one of his employees, who mentioned that his family lived near a cluster of villages whose residents have to walk over a kilometer every day and stand in line just to get clean water. The new pumps cost just $5000 to install, and could last 15 to 20 years, Bahl said, adding that his company will continue to support the community by upgrading key facilities like hospitals and schools.
If every big company in India made the same effort millions of lives could be changed, Bahl said: “There are 640,000 companies incorporated in India, many many of them much much larger than ours. Assuming even 10 percent have the resources to do anything (and $5000 isn’t really a lot), we can solve water problems for 64,000 villages and millions of people in India. Something to think about.”
