Sporting News Launches Magazine-Hybrid App

Calls it 'the Flipboard of sports'

Taking a page from the popular newsreading app Flipboard, Sporting News Media today is launching an app that combines digital-magazine content with curated news and social media elements. The launch comes a year after Sporting News shuttered its print magazine.

The editorial centerpiece of the app, available exclusively in Apple's App Store, is the Daily Issue, an updated version of SN’s daily digital magazine. A news feed features up-to-the-minute content from SN and other outlets, while a Twitter feed, dubbed Twilights, aggregates tweets from SN-approved sources. A section called What to Watch features TV listings based on a user’s location and mobile provider. Users can personalize the app around a favorite team, league or sport.

Sporting News Media CEO Juan Delgado noted sports' enormous share (30 to 40 percent) of the content consumed on mobile devices. “We wanted to provide insight into stories happening around sports, as well as real-time news,” he said.

Added CRO Rich Routman: “We’ve seen other companies in the space have success with feed-oriented content that’s altered to certain audiences, like Bleacher Report with Team Stream. We thought that the ability to have that e-reader and stream product together in one product would make for a really solid launch.”

Apple will promote the app around major sporting events. SN plans to launch the app for Android devices next year.
