SI's Matt Bean Named Editor of Entertainment Weekly

One month after editor Jess Cagle left day-to-day editorial duties at Entertainment Weekly to take the top spot at People, Time Inc. has found his successor: Matt Bean, who was most recently the managing editor of SportsIllustrated.com.

Bean, who joined Sports Illustrated in 2012, oversaw the launches of several big digital initiatives, including the magazine’s daily live talk show, SI Now, and a long-form sportswriting platform, SI.com/LongForm. Prior to that, he spent eight years at Rodale as an editor at Men’s Health, where he helped launch more than 30 mobile apps as well as the magazine’s first tablet edition, and, later, the company’s vp, digital product development.

At EW, Bean will oversee both print and digital properties. He’ll report to Cagle, now editorial director of People and Entertainment Weekly.

Unlike other weekly magazines, EW has had a comparatively good run in recent months. In the second half of 2013, the magazine's single copy sales rose 2.1 percent, per the Alliance of Audited Media (overall circulation remained flat). Ad pages rose 5.8 percent in 2013 compared with the previous year, according to the Publishers’ Information Bureau.
