'Rolling Stone' Launches Music News App

Provides live updates and Web content via iPhone

Rolling Stone is finally getting in on the mobile news game with the launch of the iPhone-only RS Music News App, which lets fans access live, on-the-go updates from the rock bible.

The app will provide a live news stream from RollingStone.com, as well as videos and photos from the site. Users can also opt to receive push notifications about breaking news or “star” their favorite artists. The launch of the free app, currently only available through the iTunes App Store, is being sponsored by Belvedere Vodka, which means that users will see a Belvedere banner on the bottom of each page.

Wenner Media has historically lagged a bit in its digital game—the Rolling Stone website, sorely in need of a facelift, needed a complete overhaul in 2010, while Men's Journal's similarly outdated site was relaunched this past spring.

The release of the RS Music News App marks the first time that the Rolling Stone brand has broken out its news content. Earlier this summer, Rolling Stone launched an “On the Road” concert listings app, and late last year, released an “Ultimate Beatles Album-by-Album Guide” for the iPad.
