Wyse Looks for Help Beyond Its Hometown

Wyse Advertising has enlisted an ex-business reporter and columnist to start an office in Cincinnati in an effort to expand the agency's new-business reach.

Mya Frazier, 28, takes the title of business development director. Her mandate: To make Wyse a more direct competitor to Southeast Ohio agencies, including Northlich, Cincinnati's largest shop.

"My game plan is to make sure that companies think of Wyse," Frazier said.

Based 240 miles southeast of Wyse's Cleveland headquarters, she will also try to drum up business in Ohio cities such as Dayton and Columbus, as well as Louisville, Ky., and Indianapolis.

Marc Wyse, the agency's CEO, said the 52-year-old shop has been affected by downturns in the local economy. He pointed to former clients TRW and Renaissance Hotels, which both left Cleveland after being sold. "Nowadays, most of [our] clients are outside of this area," Wyse said.

The agency, started by Wyse and his first wife, Lois, had a full-service office in New York that closed in 1992, and it briefly had an outpost in Oak Brook, Ill.

Wyse knows Frazier from her days as a reporter for the Plain Dealer in Cleveland and the Business Courier in Cincinnati. "She speaks our language," Wyse said.

Most recently, Frazier ran Frazier Communications in Cincinnati, a public relations firm. She was working for Wyse when both agreed to make the relationship a full-time commitment.

"Looking at agency consolidation and how agencies are going to survive," Frazier said, "I did research into these markets and developed an [expansion] plan."

Wyse won several accounts outside Cleveland last year, including Western Star Trucks in Willoughby, Ohio; Sie- Matic Kitchens in Bensalem, Pa.; and three Federal-Mogul brands in South- field, Mich.
