TBWA Names Global President

NEW YORK TBWA Worldwide CEO Jean-Marie Dru has promoted vice chairman Tom Carroll to worldwide president, a new post, the agency confirmed today.

The move positions Carroll to succeed 59-year-old Dru, who has not yet set a retirement date.

Dru also made several other top management changes at the Omnicom Group shop, creating what he described as "a very solid management organization for the future of TBWA."

Carroll, in his new role, will retain management duties on key global clients and work closely with worldwide CFO Jonathan Ramsden, in addition to Dru.

Dru today also expanded the roles of three other top executives: North American president Robert LePlae, who takes on more operating units as a result of Carroll's promotion; Asia-Pacific regional president Keith Smith, who moves up to president of international, adding oversight of European and Africa/Middle East operations; and Jeremy Pagden, who moves from worldwide president and CEO of Tequila to president of marketing services, adding Integer and Agency.com to his responsibilities.

Those regional executives will continue to report to Dru, as does Carroll, but Carroll has moved in the No. 2 spot.

The promotions "give us the opportunity to recognize individuals who have played key roles in TBWA's success in the past few years," said Dru, in a statement.

Lee Clow, chairman and chief creative officer, added: "Jean-Marie has identified the strongest and most passionate group of leaders around the world. I believe, under their leadership, TBWA is perfectly positioned to continue to build upon the outstanding success we have had as a network."

Carroll, 51, has been vice chairman since August 2004, charged primarily with managing global accounts such as Absolut and Adidas. Before that, he was president of the Americas, overseeing North and South America. He performed that operational role for more than three years.

Carroll has spent 13 years at the agency over two tours. Between 1983 and 1989, he worked in both the Los Angeles and New York offices of what was then Chiat/Day, handling accounts such as Miller, General Electric and Pizza Hut. He left in 1989 to co-found his own agency and subsequently became a partner at Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer in New York.

Carroll returned to TBWA\Chiat\Day in 1999, to lead its Playa del Rey, Calif., office as president and CEO, and has been at the shop ever since.
