A television spot for Boston's amateur baseball league was seen by a national audience on ABC's The Best Commercials You've Never Seen . . . and Some You Have III.
Greenberg Seronick O'Leary and Partners created the ad, titled "Tobacco," for the Yawkey Baseball League. The spot, produced by September Productions, features an amateur player trying to play it cool while sitting on the bench. He puts a huge wad of chewing tobacco in his mouth, not realizing how potent it is, and begins to gag and cough. The picture fades to black and the campaign's tagline appears: "Yawkey Baseball League. Just a short hop from the bigs."
Copywriter Rick McHugh was excited not only by the national exposure for his Boston shop, but also because the ad stars his brother, David McHugh, a local actor trying to make a name for himself.
The Yawkey ad, broadcast last spring, will take flight again on Greater Boston cable channels in a couple of weeks and play through the 2000 baseball season. --Lauren Wile
