NEW YORK Peter Weedfald has been promoted to svp of sales and marketing for Samsung's consumer electronics division, a new position, the company said.

Weedfald has been svp of strategic marketing; he will continue to oversee that function. In his new role, he absorbs the responsibilities of John Garrison, who left the company last month. Garrison had been evp, sales.

He reports to president and general manager of Samsung America's consumer electronics division J.S. Shin and to D.J. Oh, who is president and CEO of Samsung Electronics America. The company is based in Seoul, South Korea, with U.S. headquarters in Ridgefield Park, N.J.

Samsung awarded its estimated $150 million global consumer advertising account to a team from WPP Group last year. Samsung Electronics markets HDTVs, camcorders, DVD players, digital audio products and home appliances.

Before joining Samsung in 2001, Weedfald was general manager of Web operations at ViewSonic. He has also worked at publishing concern Ziff-Davis, overseeing magazines and Web sites for various magazines such as MacUser and Computer Shopper.
